The Department of Public Works Division includes the Village Electric, Public Works, Sewer, and Water departments. The Director of Public Works administers the operations of the Public Works division and is responsible to the Village Board and the Municipal Board.
Municipal Power
The Village owns and operates Skaneateles Electric, one of 50 municipally owned electric companies in New York state, which supplies power to approximately 800 Village homes and businesses at rates that are approximately 30% less than typical utility costs. The capital requirements and operating costs of the department are funded entirely through rates paid by the customers. The Municipal Board supervises the strategic operations of the department and the board members are appointed by the Mayor, with approval by the Village Trustees, and serve for a term of four years.
Water Department
Skaneateles Lake is the source of unfiltered drinking water for approximately 250,000 people including the Village and Town of Skaneateles, the City of Syracuse and parts of Onondaga County. The water from Skaneateles Lake is one of a very few bodies of water in New York State so clean that there is an exception to the filtering requirement normally imposed. The water is treated with chlorine and provided directly to residents.
